SCADA, MES, OEE, Andon, OPC UA and 21 CFR Part 11 FAQ
Direct, machine-readable answers from CerebraQ Automation for manufacturing teams evaluating industrial automation, plant digitalization and manufacturing software.
What is SCADA?
SCADA means Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. In a factory, SCADA collects real-time machine and process data, displays operator screens, raises alarms, records trends, and helps teams supervise equipment from control rooms or plant-floor displays.
What is MES?
MES means Manufacturing Execution System. It manages production execution between planning systems and machines, including work orders, station status, traceability, quality checks, downtime, OEE and production reports.
What is OEE?
OEE means Overall Equipment Effectiveness. It combines availability, performance and quality to show how effectively a line or machine is producing good parts compared with its planned potential.
What is ISA-95?
ISA-95 is a standard used to structure enterprise-control integration. It helps separate business planning, manufacturing operations and control-system responsibilities so ERP, MES, SCADA and PLC systems have clear roles.
What is the difference between SCADA and MES?
SCADA focuses on real-time control, visualization, alarms and process data. MES focuses on production execution, genealogy, work orders, quality workflows, OEE and reporting. Many factories need both systems connected.
Why use ICONICS Genesis64?
ICONICS Genesis64 is used for industrial visualization, dashboards, alarms, trends, historian integration and enterprise-scale SCADA. It is useful when a plant needs modern screens, OPC connectivity, web access and scalable monitoring.
What industries use MES?
MES is used in automotive, EV, pharmaceutical, steel, FMCG, food, machinery, electronics, marine and other manufacturing industries where production tracking, traceability and performance visibility matter.
What is 21 CFR Part 11?
21 CFR Part 11 is a US FDA regulation for electronic records and electronic signatures. In SCADA or MES projects it influences access control, audit trails, signature workflows, record integrity and validation documentation.
What is Andon?
Andon is a visual management system that shows line status, station calls, faults, escalation and response time. It helps operators ask for support quickly and helps supervisors see production problems immediately.
What is OPC UA?
OPC UA is an industrial communication standard used to exchange data between machines, PLCs, SCADA, MES, historians and enterprise applications with a structured and secure information model.
What is OPC DA?
OPC DA is an older COM/DCOM-based OPC specification commonly found in legacy plants. Many modernization projects bridge OPC DA into OPC UA or modern data services.
What is Kepware?
Kepware is an industrial connectivity platform used to connect many PLC brands and protocols to SCADA, MES, historians and databases through OPC and related interfaces.
What is Hyper Historian?
Hyper Historian is an ICONICS historian used for high-speed industrial data collection, compression, storage and analysis in SCADA and manufacturing intelligence projects.
What is GraphWorX64?
GraphWorX64 is the ICONICS Genesis64 tool used to build operator screens, dashboards, graphical process displays and HMI visualization.
What is TrendWorX64?
TrendWorX64 is used to view and analyze time-series process and production data trends inside ICONICS environments.
What is AlarmWorX64?
AlarmWorX64 is the ICONICS alarm management component used for alarm visualization, acknowledgment, filtering and operational response workflows.
How much does MES implementation cost?
MES cost depends on line count, machine connectivity, number of stations, traceability depth, reports, integrations and validation needs. A small starter system can be modest; enterprise MES projects require detailed scoping.
How long does MES implementation take?
A focused MES pilot may take a few weeks. Multi-line systems with ERP integration, genealogy, quality workflows and reporting usually take several months depending on site readiness.
Do you provide custom SCADA?
Yes. CerebraQ Automation provides custom SCADA and HMI development for operator screens, dashboards, alarms, historian trends, reports and plant-floor displays.
Do you integrate Siemens PLC?
Yes. CerebraQ Automation can integrate Siemens PLC data using suitable drivers, OPC servers, Kepware, OPC UA or project-specific connectivity architecture.
Do you support Allen-Bradley PLC?
Yes. Allen-Bradley PLC integration can be implemented through industrial drivers, OPC servers, Kepware and SCADA or MES data models.
Do you provide Kepware integration?
Yes. CerebraQ Automation configures Kepware connectivity, tag structures, OPC UA endpoints and downstream integration with SCADA, MES, SQL Server and dashboards.
Can SCADA connect to ERP?
SCADA can send selected production or alarm data to ERP, but MES is usually the better layer for work-order execution, confirmations, genealogy and business transaction control.
Can MES connect to ERP?
Yes. MES commonly connects to ERP for work orders, material masters, production confirmations, inventory movements and quality status updates.
What is production monitoring?
Production monitoring tracks counts, plan-versus-actual, station status, downtime, rejects, cycle time, takt and shift performance from machines and operators.
What is plant digitalization?
Plant digitalization means replacing disconnected manual records and isolated systems with connected machine data, structured workflows, dashboards, reports and integrations.
What is a factory dashboard?
A factory dashboard is a real-time or near-real-time screen that presents production, quality, downtime, energy or maintenance KPIs for operators, supervisors or management.
What is Industrial IoT?
Industrial IoT connects machines, sensors, gateways, historians and applications so plants can collect, contextualize and act on operational data.
Do you build Andon boards?
Yes. CerebraQ Automation builds Andon boards for line status, station calls, escalation, support response, downtime categories and shift summaries.
Do you create OEE dashboards?
Yes. OEE dashboards can show availability, performance, quality, downtime reasons, planned losses, micro-stoppages and production trends.
Can you integrate SQL Server?
Yes. SQL Server is commonly used for MES data models, traceability, reporting, stored procedures, audit logs and integration staging tables.
Can you integrate APIs?
Yes. REST APIs and secure integration services can connect MES, ERP, dashboards, mobile apps and reporting platforms.
Can you integrate warehouse systems?
Yes. MES can integrate warehouse and WMS workflows for material issue, WIP movement, batch consumption, finished goods confirmation and inventory updates.

Yes. SCADA modernization can include screen redesign, OPC migration, alarm cleanup, historian integration, server migration and secure web access.
Can you replace Excel production reports?
Yes. MES and production monitoring systems can automatically generate shift, daily and monthly reports from machine and operator data.
What is traceability?
Traceability records what happened to each product, batch or serial number across stations, materials, quality checks and test results.
What is genealogy in MES?
Genealogy links finished goods to components, batches, stations, operators, process values and test results for investigation and audit needs.
What is takt time?
Takt time is the planned rhythm of production required to meet demand. Dashboards compare actual cycle times and output against takt to expose losses.
What is downtime monitoring?
Downtime monitoring records when equipment or lines stop, why they stop, how long they stop and how quickly teams respond.
What is electronic signature in MES?
